Sunday Division Two 2005/06 Results and Reports
Phoenix 2 Cookley 1 Phoenix entered the game without player of the season favourite, Dave Mason in goal and out of a current squad of 24 were only able to field 11 with the Manager and Club Secretary filling the places on the bench. With Danny Totney filling in between the posts and a host of players playing for the first time in months and many out of position, the signs were ominous. For the first time in weeks, Phoenix began well and were first to the early challenges and the passing was sharp and accurate and the home team definitely bossed the first 15-20 minutes. Phoenix took the lead when Graham Rowe swung in a free kick from the right hand side and JOSS PRICE rose at the far post to head home. Cookley responded superbly and had the ball in the net within minutes, only to be rightly ruled out for offside. Phoenix doubled the lead through the same combination of the first goal. A deep corner from Graham Rowe was headed against the defender by JOSS PRICE, who was first to the rebound and finished with aplomb from 3 inches out. Cookley dominated the last 15 minutes of the half looking to get a goal back but the Phoenix back four held firm and should probably have taken a match winning 3 goal lead when Graham Rowe sent Lee McDermott racing through, only for the Phoenix top scorer to put the ball the wrong side of the left hand post. Cookley came at Phoenix at the start of the 2nd half but were guilty of poor finishing on several occasions and Dan Totney swept up any close chances. Cookley had another goal disallowed as the Phoenix keeper was pushed over the line with the ball. Phoenix should have had a third with the best move of the game as Dan Nash and Dave Anderson combined down the left before Stuart Brogan swept the ball in at the near post. The referee was not in a position to see that the ball had crossed the line and played on. Cookley continued to attack with the wind at their backs but still failed to threaten the home goal until a right wing corner was nodded into the corner. Again the referee was not in a position to see that the ball had again crossed the line and justice was probably evened out Cookley managed to gain a consolation goal in the final minute when Ryan Rowe finished from just inside the area but Phoenix were not to be denied. A huge team effort from the lads to restore the confidence that has drained from the club over the last month. Players will be returning from next week onwards but todays 11 must be congratulated, especially Dan Totney as stand in goalkeeper, Angelo Gualano who was superb at right back, Joss Price, my man of the match and a colossus as the back and deadly up front, Dave Tuner, first full game and very impressive, Adam Tillsley out of retirement and as committed as ever, Toby O'Brien and Stuart Brogan excellent, Graham Rowe had his best game of his Phoenix career, disciplined and superbly accurate with his passing, Dan Nash out for a couple of weeks but back as good as ever, Lee McDermott superb slightly out of position and finally Matt McGarragh, when was the last time he played, held the ball up well and did more than was expected from him. Dan Totney Angelo Gualano Joss Price Dave Turner Adam Tillsey Toby O'Brien Graham Rowe Stuart Brogan Dan Nash Lee McDermott Matt McGarragh Subs - Dave Anderson Chaddesley Corbett 1 Phoenix 1 Chaddesley started the better of two sides clearly short on confidence and but for poor finishing and a couple of sharp saves from Dave Mason the home side would have taken the lead. The game had a "friendly" feel to it for long period of each half with neither side able to take a grip of proceedings. Tobias O'Brien thought he had put the visitors ahead when his swerving freekick was held by the keeper but it was Chaddesley who broke through when a speculative long range effort flew into the top corner. Both sides toiled for much of the second half with neither keeper being tested at all before in the final few minutes Stuart Brogan bravely challenged the Chaddesley keeper and centre half and ANGELO GUALANO was on hand to squeeze the ball home . Dave Mason Angelo Gualano Joss Price Mark Dudley Dan Totney Toby O'Brien Lee Stuart Stuart Brogan Graham Rowe Lee McDermott Paul Mason Subs - Ricky Sanders Alex Reeves Phoenix 1 Hoolahans 1 (1-3 pens) Phoenix were unlucky to fall in the second round of the Hospital Cup against higher ranked opposition from The Redditch League. Hoolahans took a grip of the game from the start with superb passing and movement. Phoenix were fortunate that for all of their possession the visitors were only able to create one real chance that Sean Harris tipped around the post. Phoenix took the lead totally against the run of play when LEE MCDERMOTT raced onto a through ball from John Griffin and slotted past the keeper. It was almost two minutes later when John Griffin cut in from the right, but he could only shoot into the side netting to give Hoolahans a let off. Hoolahans increased the pace of their play at the start of the 2nd period and soon equalised from close range. Hoolahans should have taken the lead when the forward was sent clean through, but he weekly lobbed over the bar. The game opened up for the last half an hour and Phoenix started to match their opponents and had several half chances to win the game. Hoolahans tried to force the pace in extra time and Phoenix were indebted to Sean Harris, who make a couple of excellent saves, but no further gaos arrived. The Hoolahans goalkeeper won the penalty shootout with three fines saves as the Redditch side ran out 3-1 winners. Phoenix 2 Crestwood Star 0 Phoenix coped with only having one recognised forward to record a comfortable win. The opening exchanges were even with neither side getting a grip on the game and mistakes dominating the play. Phoenix took the lead after 20 minutes when Joss Price was upended in the box. TOBY O'BRIEN smashed the penalty home. The lead may have been extended shortly after when Angelo Gualano pounced on a mistake from the keeper on the edge of the area, but his shot hit the side netting. Phoenix dominated the second half and created numerous chances for Graham Rowe, Angelo Gualano and Stuart Brogan, but it took a wonder strike from JOHN GRIFFIN to secure the points. He took the ball down 30 yards out, cut inside before unleashing a thunderbolt into the top left corner. Phoenix spent the last 15 minutes trying for a third but to no avail. Hoobrook Crown 3 Phoenix 1 aet An awful refereeing decision cost Phoenix dearly as they crashed out of the county cup. For a change Phoenix started well and should have taken an early lead when Stuart Brogan shook the crossbar. A superb passing move of 10 one touch passes would have given Phoenix the goal of the decade but Stuart Brogan's lob was wayward. At the other end prolific Richard Burgess missed an absolute sitter for Hoobrook as he was left one on one with Dave Mason. Phoenix took the lead 10 minutes into the second half when a long ball from Mark Dudley evaded the home defence and JOHN GRIFFIN tucked the ball away. Phoenix had further chances to increase the lead with both Lee McDermott and John Griffin going close. Hoobrook were not threatening Phoenix but with 10 minutes left the referee amazingly awarded a penalty for handball against Ross Newman. You can always tell by player reactions whether a penalty is due and most players continued playing. Hoobrook duly put the penalty away and effectively this was too much of a body blow to Phoenix. Hoobrook scored two more goals in the 2nd period of extra time . Moreton Town 2 Phoenix 3 Phoenix progressed to the Worcester Infirmary Cup semi finals for the third year running after a comfortable win at forstbound Moreton in the Marsh. The home side caught Phoenix cold in the early minutes and threw players forward. It did not take long for them to take the lead as the left winger cut inside and fired into the far corner. Moreton were playing well at this stage and Dave "Billy" Mason kept the visitors in the game with a remarkable double save and a tip around the post. Phoenix worked out that their opponents were susceptible at the back and equalised when John Griffin took the ball round the keeper and aimed to fire home, but miss-kicked. PAUL MASON was on hand to put the ball into the net. Phoenix were well on top now, playing attractive football and PAUL MASON scored again soon after, tucking away from close range. DAN TOTNEY made it three goals in a short time when he controlled the ball at the edge of the area and placed the ball into the bottom right corner. Phoenix suffered a set back at the start of the 2nd half when Jamie Thorpe was sent off, but they changed their game to more of a counter attacking game, which worked well and left the visitors comfortable but still able to threaten the home side. Phoenix should have taken a larger lead when Tobias O'Brien hit the post and John Griffin hit the bar. In the final moments Dave Mason produced another fine save but was beaten in the final seconds with a close range effort. Dave Mason Ross Newman Alex Reeves Jamie Thorpe Dan Totney (1) Toby O'Brien Lee Stuart Stuart Brogan Dan Nash Paul Mason (2) John Griffin Subs - Graham Rowe Lee McDemott Angelo Gualano Phoenix 3 Cookley 2 A change in fortunes for Phoenix as their worst performance for a couple of months produced a win. Manager, Dave Anderson brought John Griffin in for a deserved start to replace Lee McDermott, who joined another 25 goal a season scorer Deane Machin on the treatment table. Phoenix started in a lethargic manner but should still have taken the lead when John Griffin cut in from the right, only to be thwarted by the Cookley keeper who thrust out an arm when a goal looked certain. Cookley were playing as badly as the home side but should maybe have been awarded a penalty when Jamie Thorpe mistimed a challenge on the edge of the area. Phoenix took the lead mid way through the half when Dan Nash surged through from midfield and produced a superb through ball to JOHN GRIFFIN, who fired home from the edge of the box. After creating the goal Dan Nash was blatantly kicked in front of the referee, who ignored the rules and simply booked the offender. Cookley came back into the game and Phoenix were indebted to Dave "Billy" Mason who produced a couple of fine saves to keep the home side in the lead ( is that ok Billy ?) Cookley equalised shortly into the second half when a free kick from the right evaded the first line of defence and RYAN ROWE was left with an easy tap in at the far post. Cookley took the lead with a hotly disputed penalty. In line with Premiership referees, today's felt that a ball that hit an elbow from 2 yards away was "deliberate" and gave the away side a gift of a penalty. RYAN ROWE coolly tucked the kick away. Minutes later the referee evened up the penalty count as he awarded Phoenix a soft penalty as Joss Price was challenged in the area. TOBIAS O'BRIEN slammed the kick into the net. In the final moments, Phoenix grabbed a dramatic winner when Ross Newman fed JOHN GRIFFIN 30 yards out, Griff turned and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. Phoenix started off on the shaky side and put themselves under pressure in the early stages of the game when keeper Dave Mason had to deal with a wayward back pass. Mason was called into action again shortly after when he made a fine double save to deny the Fish forward who ran through from half way. Despite their lowly league positions, both sides were playing attractive passing football and from a move involving 6 or 7 passes, Fish took the lead from a shot from the edge of the area that flew into the corner of the net. Phoenix were playing a full part in the match but for all of the good approach play, they were guilty of holding onto the ball for a bit too long, instead of getting an early shot in. Phoenix did equalise before half time when Joss Price sent a stunning cross-field ball down the left channel. PAUL MASON appeared to have gone too wide but guided the ball over the keeper into the net. Phoenix controlled the second half for long spells with Angelo Gualano and Dan Nash causing problems down the wings and Lee McDermott and Paul Mason linking up well up front. It was LEE MCDERMOTT who gave Phoenix the lead when he combined with Paul Mason before tucking the ball away. Phoenix should have gone further ahead when Dan Nash waltzed through the Fish players but, with only the keeper to beat sent the ball well wide when it looked easier to score. Paul Mason was again the provider for Phoenix's third goal as he laid the ball back for man of the match STUART BROGAN to fire the ball into the bottom corner with the outside of his right foot. Fish were becoming less of a threat but they did go close with a free kick that crashed against the bar only for Dave Mason to smother the ball. Phoenix were playing some champagne football now and this was epitomised by a shimmy and shuffle from sweeper Jamie Thorpe that sent no less than 3 opponents the wrong way. LEE MCDERMOTT completed the scoring in the closing stages when he nodded home a Angelo Gualano cross from close range. Dave Mason Ross Newman Joss Price Jamie Thorpe Alex Reeves Angelo Gualano Toby O'Brien Stuart Brogan (1) Dan Nash Paul Mason (1) Lee McDermott (2)
Phoenix 1 Burlish Olympic 4 A strange game to say the least as Phoenix dominated the game, playing some of the best football seen at Baxter College, but lacked a cutting edge and were punished by clinical finishing from the visitors. A late header from STUART BROGAN was merely a consolation. Wayne Lancett Dan Totney Joss Price Mark Dudley Alex Reeves Angelo Gualano Jamie Thorpe Stuart Brogan (1) Dan Nash John Griffin Lee McDermott Gornal Five Ways 1 Phoenix 0 Phoenix's miserable start to the league campaign continued as they failed to take their chances against top of the table opponents, who took one of very few chances they created. Injury and work commitments robbed manager, Dave Anderson of Toby O'Brien and new signing Paul Mason, and within the first few minutes last season's top scorer, Lee McDermott hobbled of after being involved in a car accident before the game. Gornal started the game with great desire and bossed the opening exchanges, firing in several long range shots, but luckily for the visitors, none troubled keeper Wayne Lancett. Phoenix had the first real chance when Joss Price rose at the far post and powered a header against the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Phoenix were having real problems in beating the home sides persistent offside trap but when John Griffin did beat it, the keeper parried his shot only for Deane Machin to put the ball over the crossbar from close range. Phoenix had a good 15 minutes spell with Griffin and Machin looking sharp up front but again the finishing was poor and several chances were spurned. Gornal could have taken the lead at the end of the first half when Joss Price cleared a shot from his own goal line and Steve Bills' shot was pushed over by Wayne Lancett. Gornal were more assertive at the start of the second half and put Phoenix under a bit of pressure, but they were still not looking like creating chances and Phoenix were happy to catch the home side on the break. Gornal scored with there first shot on target when the impressive STEVE BILLS pulled the ball down on the edge of the box, skipped round a defender and fired home into the bottom corner of the net. Gornal had the ball in the net shortly after, but the final touch came from a player in an offside position. Phoenix thought they had scored in the final minutes when Stuart Brogan hooked the ball in from 10 yards out, but after a discussion between linesman and Referee that lasted an eternity, the goal was disallowed to the amazement of the visitors. Manager, Dave Anderson brought in Alex Reeves and Graham Rowe in place of the injured John Griffin and unavailable Adam Tillsley and shuffled the midfield. Both sides took a while to get into the game and chances were limited to wayward long range shots. Phoenix started to take control and used the width of the pitch well with Toby O'Brien and Lee McDermott causing problems down the flanks. A right wing corner from Graham Rowe was met by a powerful Joss Price header that narrowly went over the bar. Rowe showed good variety shortly after when he sent a low driven corner into the box. Lee McDermott dummied the ball and JOSS PRICE was on hand to stroke the ball home at the far post. Dan Nash should have given Phoenix a 2 goal lead before half time when he weaved his way through the midfield but his shot was weak when he only had the keeper to beat. Phoenix had the perfect start to the 2nd half when DEANE MACHIN raced onto a through ball before cleverly lobbing the keeper. Phoenix made the game safe when Dan Nash burst into the area and was upended by the goalkeeper, who was lucky to stay on the pitch after a clear stamp on the player he had just brought down. DEANE MACHIN dished out his own punishment by firing the penalty into the net. LEE MCDERMOTT rounded off the scoring with a close range finish after being set up by Joss Price.
