Briars Phoenix 0 Jays 4 TEAM - Anthony Davis, Jamie Thorpe, Alex Reeves, Mark Dudley, Steve Barker, Lee Rudd, Tobias O'Brien, Stuart Brogan, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott, Dan NashSUBS - Lee Stuart, Gareth Dugagn Blackheath Malt Shovel 0 Briars Phoenix 2 Briars became the first side to stop Blackheath scoring this season in a very composed performance. The first 20 minutes were very close with the home side probably just edging the play without troubling Wayne Lancet in the Briars goal. The visitors had a superb chance to take the lead when Deane Machin put Lee McDermott through on goal but he shot from the edge of the area instead of taking the ball closer. Blackheath continued to create chances but their shoots tending to be wide rather than on target. Briars took the lead 10 minutes from half time when the Blackheath keeper was slow to come for a ball and LEE MCDERMOTT managed to head the ball over him into an empty net. Briars had a purple patch at the end of the half with Dan Nash in devastating form on the left and he almost created another two goals for LeeMcDermott as first a low cross was inches away from the him sliding into the six yard box and another cross was taken of his head with a slight touch from the defender. Brairs tending to defend deep in the second half with the slope against them but, as in the first half Wayne Lancet had no serious saves to make. With everyone working hard Briars still looked dangerous on the attack, especially Dan Nash on the left who took advantage of the space. Braisr made the game safe in the dying minutes when Nash burst away once again and beat the keeper with his shot allowing DEANE MACHIN to tap in from close range. A great team performance from the Briars with Dan Nash and Jamie Thorpe having superb games. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Jamie Thorpe, Mark Dudley, Alex Reeves, Keith Bradley, Toby O'Brien, Stuart Brogan, Dan Nash, Lee McDermott, Lee Rudd, Deane Machin SUBS - Dave Turner, Steve Barker Enville Leopard 1 Briars Phoenix 0 aet Briars were knocked out of the League Cup in a bad tempered game. Briars should have won the game in the first half with a good display of passing football. Whilst the approach play was very good the final product was not good and chance after chance was spurned. The second half was very even with neither side creating any early chance before Deane Machin was sent off for the visitors. Briars could have snatched a win in the dying minutes when Toby O'Brien went very close with a chance that he probably should have done better with. Briars were happy to see through extra time with a man short and they almost did so, Enville grabbing the winner with 4 minutes left. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Jamie Thorpe, Alex Reeves, Mark Dudley, Keith Bradley, Gareth Duggan, Toby O'Brien, Stuart Brogan, Dan Nash, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott SUBS - Dave Turner, Lee Rudd, Adam Tillsley Briars Phoenix 0 Gornal A 3 Briars failed to turn up for the game against one of the title challengers. Gornal took the lead in controversial style when Adam Tillsley was kicked in the head when heading clear and as the Briars players stopped for a free kick, Gornal put the ball into the net. Amazingly, the referee allowed the goal to stand. Gornal soon stretched their lead and dominated the first half. Briars came back into the game at the start of the second half with Stuart Brogan going close with a shot from a narrow angle before Gornal stretched their lead. To be fair to the visitors they could have scored a few more goals, especially on the break when they looked very dangerous. A game to forget for the Briars. TEAM - Lee McDermott, Adam Tillsley, Mark Dudley, Keith Bradley, Toby O'Brien, Stuart Brogan, Lee Stuart, Glenn Beaman, Gareth Duggan, Ian Poyser, Deane Machin SUBS - Alex Reeves, Lee Rudd, Dave Turner Briars Phoenix 1 Crestwood Star 1 Briars put in a poor performance and were somewhat lucky to pick up a point. The home side began brightly and in the early minutes Crestwood were very lucky not to have a player sent off when a through ball was handled, denying Deane Machin a clear run in on goal. To make matters worse for the Briars the same player committed a dangerous tackle moments later and was again allowed to remain on the pitch. The first half continued in a similar pattern with Briars dominating the possession without threatening the Crestwood goal and indeed it was the visitors who went closest with an effort that came back of the crossbar and another that hit the outside of the post. Crestwood had a more attacking attitude at the start of the second half and took the lead when stand in keeper Ian Benbow fumbled a shot and the ball was put into the net from a narrow angle. Briars took a grip on the game from then on but for still could not find a way through until a ball into the right hand side of the area was fired into the opposite corner by LEE MCDERMOTT. Several close efforts followed from Gareth Dugan and Keith Bradley before Deane Machin thought he had clained the points but his point blank shot was blocked on the line. TEAM - Ian Benbow, Jamie Thorpe, Adam Tillsley, Mark Dudley, Keith Bradley, Toby O'Brien, Stuart Brogan, Glen Beaman, Dan Nash, Lee McDermot, Deane Machin SUBS - Ian Poyser, Gareth Duggan Briars Phoenix 4 Bewdley Town 2 Briars rode their luck at times but they kept themselves in the game and were rewarded with 3 well earned points against the league leaders. The home side started well and were on top for the first ten minutes, but they went one down against the run of play when a short back pass from Alex Reeves was challenged for by debutant keeper Mark Kavanagh. To most supporters it looked like a very late challenge on the keeper, but with the goalie writhing from the foul the ball was put into the net. Bewdley took a bit of a hold on the game from now on with good passing and movement but it was the Briars who scored next when STUART BROGAN brought the ball down well in the area before firing home. Both sides were playing some decent stuff but shortly before half time Bewdley took the lead when a long through ball beat the defence before the Bewdley striker lobbed home from 30 yards out. Bewdley started the 2nd half as they finished the first, putting pressure on the Briars midfield but without challenging the goal. When they did find a through ball the Bewdley forwards showed their naivety but continually running offside. The Briars equaliser was slightly fortunate as a high ball into the area was fumbled by the keeper and DEANE MACHIN was able to tap in from close range. After this goal the Bewdley's started to get a bit jittery, allowing Glenn Beaman and Lee Struart to get a grip on the midfield battle. For the final 15 minutes the game was quite even with the game flowing from end to end, but with defences both on top but as the game entered injury time Briars took the lead. Lee McDermott was sent free down the left wing, cut inside the last defender before being brought down from behind inside the area. DEANE MACHIN duly converted the penalty. Briars finally made the game safe with another breakaway. A Bewdley corner was cleared and Dan Nash broke down the left before being brought down from behind in the area. DEANE MACHIN capped a fine performance by converting the spot kick for his 14th goal of the season. TEAM - Mark Kavanagh, Jamie Thorpe, Mark Dudley, Alex Reeves, Keith Bradley, Stuart Brogan, Lee Stuart, Glenn Beaman, Dan Nash, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott SUBS - Adam Tillsley, Toby O'Brien BENNY'S MAN OF THE MATCH - Deane Machin, hat trick capped a fine performance from the top scorer Arley 2 Briars Phoenix 6 Briars got back to winning ways in style against the bottom club. Briars started the better and had two good chances in the first five minutes but Deane Machin and Lee McDermott could not make clean connections on a thickly grassed pitch. Arley took the lead against the run of play when a long clearance was misjudged by Lee Rudd and the Arley player was able to lob Wayne Lancett. Briars equalised shortly after. Alex Reeves fed a superb through ball to Deane Machin on the right wing and his cross left Lee McDermott with an opportunity from a few yards out, the ball got caught in the heavy grass and the Arley keeper was able to make the save only for the rebound to fall to DEANE MACHIN who fired home. Briars completed the comeback shortly after when Glenn Beaman again set by DEANE MACHIN on the right hand edge of the area, the prolific striker calmly lifted the ball over the diving keeper to give the visitors the lead. Arley pulled themselves back into the game when the referee over ruled the linesman from at least 30 yards behind play. From the resulting corner Arley scored after a goalmouth scramble. The opening 20 minutes of the second half were quite even with both midfields battling to take control and chances few and far between. Briars did have the ball in the net but Gareth Duggan's header from the edge of the area was ruled offside. The visitors did take the lead when quick thinking from DEANE MACHIN saw him curl a free kick into the corner of the net from just outside the area. Briars took control from this point and scored a fourth when Deane Machin picked the ball up on the right edge of the area and chipped the keeper only for the ball to come back off the crossbar. LEE MCDERMOTT was on hand to head the ball home from close range. Arley were struggling to cope with the Briars passing and a move down the left wing ended with KEITH BRADLEY bursting into the area and hitting the far corner from a narrow angle. The best was saved until last when a Wayne Lancett clearance was controlled by DEANE MACHIN, who chipped the keeper from fully 40 yards out to cap a fine performance. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Jamie Thorpe, Alex Reeves, Lee Rudd, Keith Bradley, Gareth Dugan, Lee Stuart, Glenn Beaman, Dan Nash, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott SUBS - Ian Poyser, Adam Tillsley, Mark Dudley BENNY'S MAN OF THE MATCH - Glenn Beaman - Back to his best, controlled the midfield and seemed to appear everywhere on the pitch. Briars Phoenix 0 Summerhouse 0 Briars missed out on the chance to go 2nd in the table after a disappointing performance against the bottom club. Briars started the game well and kept the ball for long period but, as is so often the case, the final ball was lacking. Summerhouse were playing in a determined way and Briars fell into the trap of getting involved in a battle instead of playing the football. The first half was short on decent chances with Summerhouse failing to get a shot on target and Briars going close through Ian Poyser headers and a Lee McDermott opportunity when the ball got caught up in his legs when clear through. Summerhouse took a bigger grip on the game in the second half but Briars keeper Wayne Lancett only had one long range shot on target to save comfortably. Briars still looked very dangerous on the break but were unable to cause the visitors keeper any serious problems. With 5 minutes Briars had a glorious chance as Lee Rudd chased a lost cause down the right and dispossessed the last defender, leaving Briars 2 on 1 against the keeper. Unfortunate, the cross went straight into the keepers arms instead of to the unmarked player. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Alex Reeves, Lee Rudd, Keith Bradley, Gareth Dugan, Lee Stuart, Jamie Thorpe, Glenn Beaman, Dan Nash, Deane Machin, Ian Poyser SUBS - Mark Dudley, Adam Tillsley Droitwich Spa 3 Briars Phoenix 0 With eight members of the squad unavailable Briars had trouble putting out a side for this Worcestershire Junior Cup game. Manager Dave Anderson named himself in the starting line up and also gave first starts of the season to Lee Rudd, Alex Reeves and Ian Poyser. Even Club Secretary, Ian Benbow donned a kit for a final 15 minute run out. Briars looked comfortable for the first ten minutes and created a couple of good chances for Lee McDermott and Deane Machin. It was Droitwich who took the lead against the run of play when the ball was lost in the briars midfield before being played down the right wing. When the cross came it landed at the far post with an unmarked Droitwich player able to stab it home. The game returned to its normal pattern with Briars keeping the ball and passing well except for in the final third with too many balls going straight through to the Droitwich keeper. Droitwich went two up on the half hour when a long ball over the top caused confusion between Alex Reeves and Wayne Lancett and a hurried clearance from the visitor's keeper was chipped back into the empty net from 30 yards out. Briars thought they had got a foothold in the game shortly before half time when a long range shot from Deane Machin beat the keeper only to come back off the upright. If the Briars were on top in the first half they totally dominated the second period and if they had not left their shooting boots at home would surely have come back into the game and maybe got a result. In the dying minutes Droitwich made the game safe with a breakaway goal. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Alex Reeves, Lee Rudd, Keith Bradley, Gareth Duggan, Jamie Thorpe, Lee McDermott, Dave Anderson, Dan Nash, Ian Poyser, Deane Machin SUB - Ian Benbow Briars Phoenix 4 Cleobury Town 2 Briars never got into top gear but still collected 3 points after twice letting their Shropshire opponents back into the game. Manager Dave Anderson highlighted the sides slow starts in his pre match talk and it obviously had the right effect as the home side took the game to Cleobury from the off. DEANE MACHIN gave Briars the lead after 5 minutes when he chased a long clearance from Wayne Lancett, beat the keeper to the ball and headed into an empty net. Briars continued to control the game and almost took the lead when a back header from a Cleobury defender was tipped around the post by the keeper. After dominating the game Briars allowed Cleobury back in when the ball was lost in midfield and JAMES MANLEY was fed clean through to place the ball under Wayne Lancett. Briars forced their way straight back into the game and retook the lead when LEE MCDERMOTT volleyed home a rebound from 6 yards. On the stroke of half time Briars were again hit with a sucker punch when the ball was lost and JAMES MANLEY skipped down the right wing before beating Wayne Lancett to the ball and scoring from a tight angle. The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Briars dominating the possession and they took the lead when Lee McDermott was pushed in the area with the goal at his mercy. DEANE MACHIN duly converted the penalty. MACHIN completed his hat trick half way through the half after good work from Lee McDermott left him with a chance from the edge of the 6 yard box. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Adam Tillsley, Dan Nash, Mark Dudley, Keith Bradley, Jamie Thorpe, Glenn Beaman, Lee Stuart, Gareth Duggan, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott. SUBS - Ian Poyser, Steve Barker MAN OF THE MATCH - After two seasons showing glimpses of what he can do, Dan Nash put in a complete performance, both in defence and going forward for 90 minutes. Briars Phoenix 4 Enville Leopard 0 Manager Dave Anderson made a brave decision to stick with the side that performed so badly in the previous game but the ploy worked and produced one of the best Briars performances for some time against a strong Enville side. Enville started the game quickly and put the home side under pressure from the offset and Briars were indebted to keeper Wayne Lancett who pulled off a superb reflex save in the opening minute to deny a close range goal. Briars lost Stuart Brogan through injury in the early stages and had to withstand an onslaught from Enville for the first 15 minutes with the visitors forcing many corners and the back four having to make several latch ditch tackles, but they stood firm and Enville were not able to take advantage. After this period of pressure there was really only one side in it as Briars took a grip on the game with Glenn Beaman and Lee Stuart dominating the midfield allowing Dan Nash to make surging runs down the left. It was the Enville keepers turn to be busy as Briars went close on several occasions with Gareth Duggan having the best chance but unable to put enough power onto his shot after a block from the keeper. On the stroke of half time Briars took a deserved lead with a superb goal. Wayne Lancett sent a long kick over the Enville back four and LEE McDERMOTT could have ran the ball in on goal but instead he produced an exquisite lob from 30 yards that beat the keeper before going in off the post. The second half was only five minutes old when we had the 2nd candidate for goal of the season. Toby O'Brien sent a long ball upfield from right back and DEANE MACHIN showed great skill to bring the ball down in an instant before turning the defender, dummying the goalkeeper and slotting the ball home. Machin turned provider shortly after when he picked the ball up on the right wing before sending a low cross into the area, LEE McDERMOTT was on the end of the pass to guide the ball home. Enville had a chance to pull a goal back from a shot from the edge of the area but Wayne Lancett pulled off another superb save at the foot of the post. Briars made the game safe when Toby O'Brien sent a cross in from the right and GARETH DUGGAN was able to bring the ball down before firing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner. Briars saw out the rest of the game with neat passing moves and could have added more goals with Ian Poyser going close on a couple of occasions. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Adam Tillsley, Dan Nash, Keith Bradley, Mark Dudley, Toby O'Brien, Glenn Beaman, Stuart Brogan, Gareth Duggan, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott SUBS - Ian Poyser, Jamie Thorpe, Lee Stuart MAN OF THE MATCH - Everyone played very well but Glenn Beaman just shaded it with an influential performance in midfield. Four Furnaces 7 Briars Phoenix 5 A great game for the neutral but one that left Briars manager Dave Anderson tearing his hair out as poor finishing and even poorer defending let 3 points go. Briars got off to a nightmare start as, after on a couple of minutes when a right wing cross was nodded in by Daniel Jones. Briars then took a hold of the game and looked dangerous when passing the ball and the defence was coping well with the long ball game of the home side. Deane Machin and Lee McDermott were looking dangerous for Briars and both went close to equalising. After 30 minutes Four Furnaces showed good skill in midfield with neat passing before a glorious ball was fed out to Daniel Jones on the left wing. He cut inside before unleashing a powerful shot into the corner of the net. Briars could have pulled a goal back just before half time when Deane Machin controlled a Wayne Lancett free kick before turning and shooting in one only to see the ball crash back off the crossbar. Briars started the second half in the best way possible, a Deane Machin shot squirmed under the keeper into the net. Almost immediately Briars were level as Lee McDermott found some space and fired into the corner of the net. Briars were in a purple patch at this point and should have finished the game off as Lee McDermott, Deane Machin, Glenn Beaman and Gareth Duggan all missed good chances. Four Furnaces then scored twice in a matter of minutes to swing the game the other way. Tobias O'Brien hit a bullet of a free kick from 30 yards to reduce the arrears and the Gareth Duggan was on hand to slam home a rebound after Lee McDermott's shot was saved. After getting back into the game Briars were again caught by a sucker punch when the ball was not cleared from the edge of the area allowing the Four Furnaces player a clear run on goal which he finished well. Disaster struck shortly after when Stuart Brogan needlessly handled in the penalty area and despite Briars having two defenders on the goal line the referee decided to send Brogan off The penalty was coolly put away. A long through ball caught the Briars defence square but Wayne Lancett covered the ball only for the Four Furnaces player to lunge at Lancett on the floor. Lancett reacted and was sent off but to the amazement of the players, no punishment was given to the Four Furnaces player, deja vu as far as the Briars are concerned. Toby O'Brien had the last word in a crazy match when he lobbed the keeper from 45 yards to end the scoring. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Adam Tillsley, Dan Nash, Keith Bradley, Mark Dudley, Toby O'Brien, Glenn Beaman, Stuart Brogan, Gareth Duggan, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott SUBS - Lee Rudd, Ian Poyser, Dave Turner MAN OF THE MATCH - You must be joking Chaddesley Corbett 0 Briars Phoenix 2 Briars began the 2004/2005 Season with a solid performance. Both sides began the game trying to keep their shape rather than being too adventurous, whilst both sides played some good football at times neither keeper was forced into a difficult save during the first period. Briars took more of a grip on the game after half time and after 15 minutes Glenn Beaman sent a 20 yard half volley flying over the bar. Briars took the lead half way through the half when Lee McDermott challenge at the far post and from the following scramble the ball was half cleared to DEANE MACHIN who side footed home from 6 yards 10 minutes later the lead was doubled when DEANE MACHIN found himself blocked by a group of players in the area. He calmly beat the first defender before firing into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Chaddesley pushed more players up front and Wayne Lancett came to the rescue when he made a superb block at the feet of Richard Ash. Briars continued to push and both Gareth Duggan and Stuart Brogan went close in the dying minutes. TEAM - Wayne Lancett, Adam Tillsley, Dan Nash, Keith Bradley, Mark Dudley, Toby O'Brien, Glenn Beaman, Stuart Brogan, Gareth Duggan, Deane Machin, Lee McDermott SUBS - Ian Poyser, Dave Tunrner, Jamie Thorpe MAN OF THE MATCH - Keith Bradley (65% of Vote) - A solid performance at the heart of the defence
