Division 3
Hartlebury Taveners 3 Briars Phoenix 2
Briars suffered another defeat in an exciting end of season
game that could
have swung either way. Both sides had chances at the start of the game
with Tony Davis especially pulling off a couple of fine saves in the
Briars goal. Briars took the lead when LEE RUDD found the net. He should
have extended the lead shortly after when he waltzed round defenders
before putting the ball over the crossbar with only the keeper to beat.
Hartlebury equalised shortly before half time with a volley from close
range after a goalmouth scramble. Chances were a plenty at the start of
the second half with Hartlebury on top. Lee Rudd could have had a couple
of goals from good solo runs but his finishing wasn't up to the normal
standards. Hartlebury took the lead when a corner was nodded back across
the face of goal and headed in from a couple of yards. Briars hit back
almost immediately when a Lee McDermott cross was crashed home by DAVE
WILLIAMS at the far post. In the dying minutes Hartlebury secured the
points with a break away move well finished into the corner.

Briars Phoenix 0
Another disappointing result for the Briars who more than
matched their
higher placed rivals for the first hour and then collapsed after letting
in a
goal. Briars had a good share of the play in the first half but poor
finishing and a bobbly pitch prevented them going in at half time in the
lead. The second half also started evenly until a Steve Thomas challenge
fell kindly for the Crestwood winger who raced through before
squaring the ball
past Tony Davis to his fellow forward who made no mistake.
Briars fell apart after this and conceded a further three goals towards
the
end.

Briars Phoenix 3
Hartlebury Taveners 1
A good performance from the Briars as they secured three
points to move up the league. The first half was quite even with Briars
edging the best chances whilst Hartlebury had the greater possession
with their passing game. The pick of the chances fell to Lee Rudd who
hit the post and a far post header from Dave Williams that went across
the face of the goal. As in many previous games Briars conceded a goal
just before half time when an overhead kick from the edge of the box
sailed into the net.
Half Time 0-1
Briars began the second half on top and Steve Thomas should have
converted a Lee Rudd cross but the keeper managed to cling onto the
shot. A surging run from deep in his own half by Sean Wright was brought
to an end when he was upended in the area. The resulting penalty was
converted by LEE RUDD. The other Wright brother, Matt also produced a
good run and passed when a shot was on. However, from the resulting
corner SEAN WRIGHT shot into the corner of the net.
At the other end a fine low save from Tony Davis kept the Briars in the
lead
before KEITH BRADLEY pounced on a goalkeeping error to make the game
safe. The game finished in an unsavoury manner when a Hartlebury player
was given a second yellow card for dissent and the referee had to suffer
face to face abuse from another Hartlebury player who was also sent off.

Belbroughton 1
Briars gained the point that is probably all that they need
to stay up but in
all reality it was another two points dropped even though they could
easily
have lost it all at the end of the game. Briars dominated the first half
and stand in keeper Kev Perry was untroubled throughout the half but
Briars could not take the lead despite good wide play from Lee McDermott
and Steve Thomas and with Jason Bowers looking dangerous.
Half Time 0-0
Briars again controlled the play at the start of the second half but it
was Belbroughton who took the lead when the forward latched onto a
through ball and held off the challenge of AdamTillsley before firing
home .
Kev Perry then produced a fine save to prevent Belbroughton
increasing the lead before Briars again took control. Steve Thomas was
fouled on the edge of the box and LEE RUDD produced the perfect free
kick to equalise. Almost immediately Lee Rudd picked the ball up on the
right and sent over a peach of a ball which Keith Bradley controlled
first time but then put the ball wide of the post with only the
keeper to beat. In the final moments a Belbroughton player managed to
evade several challenges and was clear through but to the relief of the
home crowd he screwed the ball wide.

Briars Phoenix 0
Briars will regard this result as two points lost rather
than one point won
as they dominated the clash of the bottom two in the division. Manager
Kev Perry was ruled out of the game through illness and the reigns were
passed to assistant player manager Dave Anderson who unfortunately got
so involved with his tactical preparations for this crucial game that he
forgot to put his shorts on ( or was this a masterstroke in his
psychological
approach to put the squad at ease ) The game was played on a hard ground
which made ball control difficult even for the quality players on show.
Briars should have taken the lead when a right wing cross was put over
the bar by top scorer Steve Thomas and the same player thought he had
given the visitors the lead shortly after only for his effort to
be ruled offside. Towards half time a Lee Rudd corner was met by a
looping header from Matt Wright which just went over the bar.
Half Time 0-0
Briars again took the game to their opponents after half time but didn't
create many chances to start with. Lee Rudd had the next chance for the
visitors when his volley from outside the box rattled the stanchion but
bounced out to the relief of the keeper. Another Briars attack followed
and a left wing cross from Keith Bradley reached Lee Rudd at the far
post but his side foot shot hit the post. Briars were having some
success with moves down the left and another cross was met on the half
volley by the luckless Lee Rudd who watched as the keeper acrobatically
flicked the ball over the bar. A corner from Dave Williams was met by
Sean Wright and blocked on the post, the rebound was hit by Mark Fish
but another block from the keeper prevented Briars taking a deserved
lead. In the end Briars had to settle for a point as the game petered
out.

Brintons Arms 8
Briars slipped back into the relegation zone on goal
difference after being
thrashed by Brinton Arms who still have a chance of winning the league.
Brintons started well and took an early lead when a through ball caught
the Briars defence on the hop and Tony Davis was lobbed from the
edge of the box. Briars came back into the game and matched their higher
placed opponents for the rest of the half and probably had more chances
with Kev Perry, Lee Rudd and Craig Jones all having good chances.
As is normal for Briars a defensive lapse just before half time allowed
Brintons to double their lead when a quick throw was volleyed into the
top corner.
Half Time 0-2
Briars deservedly got straight back into the match after the break when
Lee Rudd was brought down in the area and KEV PERRY converted the
penalty. Brintons then had a purple patch of about fifteen minutes when
every attack seemed to produce a goal and quickly built up a 6-1
lead. There was no coming back from this and Brintons brought on their
subs and grabbed another two goals at the end.

Blakedown 1
Briars completed their
first league double of the season and virtually ensured that they would
not finish bottom in their first season in division 3. The home side
started well, playing some nice football and deservedly took the lead
when a one-two on the edge of the area between Kev Perry and STEVE
THOMAS was put away by Briars' leading scorer. Blakedown began to come
back into the game and were looking dangerous with runs from
midfield but it was Briars having the best chances especially when
Dave Williams shot straight at the keeper. Blakedown equalised when a
poor free kick was played through and the Blakedown stroker lobbed
Tony Davis from the edge of the area. Just before half time a moment of
quality from LEE RUDD gave Briars the lead. Picking the ball up on the
corner of the area he used the run of Lee McDermott on the outside as a
decoy and cut inside the defence before curling the ball into the
top corner.
Half Time 2-1
Blakedown took the game to Briars for most of the second half as the
Briars passing started to go astray and it took a superb double save
from Tony Davis to keep them in the game and it wasn't until the final
minutes that Briars made the game safe when new signing JASON BOWERS
raced through the defence and around the keeper before rolling the
ball into the empty net.

This scrappy bottom of the table clash began with neither
side taking control resulting in poor play and few chances.
Stourbridge took the lead when a free kick deceived Tony Davis in the
Briars goal and the ball was headed against the bar, it fell directly to
a Stourbridge player who had the simplist of chances to put his
team one up.
A half time roasting bucked the Briars up but they were caught by a
break
from midfield and were 2-0 down. Within a couple of minutes it was
three when the ball was picked up on the edge of the Briars' box and
curled into the corner. From this point it was all over for the home
team who failed to create any worthwhile chances.

Sedgley Town 9 Briars
Phoenix 1
Sedgley gained revenge for the thrashing they suffered
against Briars earlier in the season. Sedgley began kicking down the
slope against a Briars team down to the bare bones through injuries and
work commitments and soon had the visitors under pressure and took the
lead when a crossball from the right was picked up and finished by the
left winger. Briars hit back immediately when Luke Lancett fed Lee
McDermott down the right and his low cross was tucked away by STEVE
THOMAS. Briars were competing well at this point and should have taken
the lead when another McDermott cross was just too high and Keith
Bradley's header went wide.
Luke Lancett burst through the midfield and shot just over the bar in
another good attack from the away side. It was Sedgley who took another
lead, the centre forward shooting home from the edge of the six yard
box. A controversial moment on the half hour mark probably changed the
game, Keith Bradley burst down the left into the box only to be pulled
back by the full back. A penalty was given before there was a lengthy
delay as the first the Sedgley manager and then secretary came onto the
pitch to argue with the referee. The break in action obviously put Lee
Rudd off and he steered the penalty wide of the post. Briars conceeded
another bad goal on the stroke of half time when the centre forward was
given too much space on the edge of the area and shot into the corner.
Half Time 3-1
Briars conceeded an early goal in the second half when Sedgley broke
away and increased their lead. Briars totally collapsed with this goal
and Sedgley ran in another five to complete the rout and still leave
Briars in desperate trouble at the foot of the league. Briars must pick
themselves up quick with the next four games against fellow strugglers
in the league.

Briars Phoenix 0
Rock Sports 0
This match may have signalled a change in luck for the
Briars as they managed to grab a point in a game they should have lost
heavily. Facing a strong wind in the first half the home side came under
almost constant pressure with only stand in keeper Kev Perry and very
poor finishing stopping Rock taking the lead. Indeed the first clear
chance fell to Briars when Steve Thomas latched onto a through ball and
steered the ball past the keeper only for a late ( and very dubious )
flag to prevent him from giving the lower placed team the lead. Briars
could have taken the lead shortly after when Graham Cousins burst
through the defence but his attempted chip was caught by the keeper.
Rock wasted several breakaways by shooting wide and Kev Perry diverted a
clear shot past the post in what was becoming a rearguard survival for
Briars with few outlets to clear the ball. Kev Perry again came to the
rescue when a corner was left by the defenders and he had to punch the
ball clear from on the goal-line. In a rare forward move Briars were
awarded a free kick on the edge of the box which Graham Cousins slammed
against the bar with the rebound just evading Matt Wright.
Half Time 0-0
Rock played significantly better against the wind in the second half
with countless breakway's but again bad finishing kept Briars in the
game. Briars really didn't contest the second half with only a
long range effort from Keith Bradley and a couple of Lee Rudd free kicks
remotely close to giving them an undeserved lead. However, Briars will
be happy that no goals were conceded in a poor display and a
valuable point was gained where normally the luck would have gone
against them and they would have been on the receiving end of a
stuffing.

Lyttleton 4
A predictable result with bottom of the league playing the
leaders but the result in no way reflected the trouble Lyttleton had in
winning the game. There was nothing between the 2 teams in the first
half hour and the visitors became more and more frustrated as Briars
kept hold of the ball for long periods. Indeed the home team should have
taken the lead when a Steve Thomas corner ran across the box 2 yards out
and amazingly evaded everybody. Somewhat against the run of play
Lyttleton took the lead with a quick passing move ended with YAPP
running from midfield to cleverly chip Tony Davis in the Briars' goal.
Half Time 0-1
Lyttleton appeared to have taken the sting out of Briars play at the
start of the second half and ten minutes in the doubled their lead when
a right wing cross was headed in from close range by JONES. Briars were
jolted back into the game and started to break through down the wings
but as is usual the final ball was lacking. A through ball and break
away from the lively JONES put the visitors 3-0 as he rounded the keeper
and shot into the corner. To the home teams credit they kept going and
still troubled Lyttleton, especially out wide but in the final few
minutes a deflected shot from PERRY completed the scoring and gave
Lyttleton a 4-0 win.

Briars' dire form slump continued as they crashed out of

Unusually Briars could not handle the hard tackling of their opponents
and were totally outfought for most of the game. The first half was
dominated by the visitors but had few goal chances despite controlling
the game throughout the half. Towards half time Liberty's went ahead
with their first shot at goal when a breakaway was converted.
Liberty's went 2-0 shortly after half time when a long throw landed in
the six yard box and was touched in by a home forward. Briar's again
dominated the rest of the match, reducing Liberty's to just breakaways
but as in the first half good build up play was not converted to

After last weeks excellent result against Sedgley, Briars
hit rock bottom in the clash of the bottom two.
Briars dominated the first half an hour but misplaced passes and missed
chances were the order of the day. Delph took the lead when a breakaway
from the half way line resulted in Adam Tillsley bringing down the Delph
forward in the area, the penalty was emphatically put away to give a
half time lead to the visitors.
Briars couldn't seem to get going at all today and another mistake at
the back gave Delph a 2-0 lead shortly into the second half. Briars
still couldn't raise their game against poor opponents but were given a
lifeline when a ball into the box was nodded in by SEAN WRIGHT.
Amazingly Briars almost grabbed a draw at the death when a Lee Rudd
drive was parried by the Keeper who then reacted quickly to keep out the
rebound from Wayne Lowell.

Phoenix 6 Sedgley Town 0
Relegation threatened Briars started the day badly when
manager Kev Perry was struck down with flu and luckily Dave Anderson was
able to step in to motivate the team with an inspirational team talk
including the words " Tommo, you've been crap lately work harder
" .In view of this and the use of the Briars rotation system which
rested a few of the old gits how could they fail.
As far as the match was concerned Briars totally belied their position
at second bottom and outplayed Sedgley who started the day in third
place in Kidderminster Division 3.
Briars had several chances in the first 20 minutes especially from set
pieces where Graham Cousins crosses caused no end of problems but no
Briars player could get on the end of the ball. The Sedgley goalkeeper
was playing superbly saving a couple of close range shots from scrambles
as the Briars fans feared that the chances missed would be costly
against the leagues top scorers. To everyone's relief Briars took the
lead when a Dave Williams cross was deftly ( off his arse )
touched in by WAYNE LOWELL.
Briars then came under some pressure but a point blank save from Tony
Davis kept the home side ahead.
Briars increased their lead shortly before half time when a long range
shot from WAYNE LOWELL was slightly ( how wide was it going )
deflected over the keeper into the net
Half Time 2-0
Briars began the second half totally in control and their task was made
easier when a Sedgley player was sent off for stamping on John Powell.
WAYNE LOWELL completed his hat-trick when a header through from John
Powell was mis-controlled by the Sedgley defender and the Briars "
Fabrizio Ravenelli " steered the ball past the keeper to make it
3-0.
The best goal of the game came within a couple of minutes when STEVE
THOMAS lashed the ball into the roof of the net to put Briars safe.
Obviously spurred on by assistant manager Dave Anderson's words pre
match STEVE THOMAS added another when he skipped round the keeper and
slotted home from close range. The result for Briars was capped off when
youngster SEAN WRIGHT ended a superb personal performance with a shot
from ten yards out into the corner of the net.
This performance should set the Briars up for the rest of the season as
the luck they were missing earlier on seems to have changed and on this
form they should soon climb out of the relegation places to mid table
comfort.

Briars suffered another league defeat away at mid table
Moot Meet. The pitch survived a pitch inspection but was still difficult
especially for a Briars team down to the bare bones and with several
players carrying knocks.
Moot meet took the lead early on when a shot was fumbled by Tony Davis
and the ball was put away from close range.
Briars slowly got into the game but suffered a set back when the ball
was crossed in from the right and was headed in from close range.
Half Time 2-0
The second half began evenly with neither side really creating much as
the pitch cut up.
It was Briars who scored next when a Martin Lowell through ball send
Wayne Lowell down the right his cross was met on the half volley but
debutant SEAN WRIGHT to give Briars a chance. Shortly after a left hand
cross evaded the Briars defence and the full back came in at the far
post to make it 3-1.
Briars could have got back into the game when a Wayne Lowell goal was
disallowed for offside.

The first half was very even with most of the play in midfield, the only
real chance falling to Wayne Lowell for Briars who dragged a shot just
wide of the post.
Ringspanners had a good spell at the start of the second half
hitting the post in one of their best moves.
It was Briars who took the lead 20 minutes into the half when the
Ringspanners keeper failed to deal with a Lee Rudd corner and MARTIN
LOWELL volleyed in from six yards out.
Ringspanners were soon level when a right wing cross caused confusion in
the Briars box and the ball was headed in from a few yards . Both teams
then began to create chances with Steve Thomas heading over and Tony
Davis in the Briars goal making a good double save.
Briars broke through with 2 minutes left when a Graham Cousins corner
was flicked on by Lee McDermott and STEVE THOMAS got the slightest of
touches into the corner of the net.
Briars should have made it safe when John Powell put Steve Thomas
through to shoot , the rebound fell to Wayne Lowell with an open goal

behind them and they hit the crossbar twice from a 20yard drive from
Graham Cousins and an overhead kick from Wayne Lowell but could not
break the home team down.
The equaliser finally arrived when a Graham Cousins corner who headed in
off the underside of the bar by WAYNE LOWELL.
Half Time 1-1
The second half was more even than the first and Hoobrook had a couple
of good chances to take the lead but it was Briars who went ahead when a
deep cross form Graham Cousins was headed home by the impressive WAYNE
LOWELL.
Briars were comfortable at this pointand should have held out but a
mistake from Tony Davis in goal left the Hoobrook forward with an open
goal to make the scores level.
